SERVICE PROJECTS

Save a Smile -

Save a Smile is an innovative, collaborative partnership which mirrors the mission of Cook Children's Hospital: “to improve the health status of every child through prevention and treatment of illness, disease and injury.” More than $2.2 million in dental care has been donated through Save a Smile.

Save a Smile provides restorative and preventive dental services to indigent children in Tarrant County who would likely not otherwise receive treatment. The target population of the program is pre-kindergarten through third grade children at high risk for dental disease.

Save a Smile partners with Communities In Schools of Greater Tarrant County, a non-profit organization providing health and social service resources to students at high risk for dropping out of school. These schools are located in some of the most impoverished neighborhoods in Fort Worth, Keller and Hurst-Euless-Bedford.

The club has made a number of contributions to Save a Smile. Two of our members, Tonya and Steven Fuqua, who are local dentists, are active in this program.

Adopt-A-Family/Children

Last year the club adopted two families who were in need due to situations beyond their control.

This year our club has adopted 10 children from the Alliance for Children.  There will be a donation tree set up at Grayson Allen (address below) at 12:00 today through 12/8 if you would like to sponsor a child and do the shopping, maybe with your kids.  If you're not a shopper, you can drop off a donation at Grayson Allen or at the Kiwanis Christmas Party (12/4) or at the next Kiwanis meeting (12/9).  All donations must be received by 12/9!

Thank you and let's all work to make Christmas wishes come true for these deserving children.

Kiwanis Service Committee

Stalcup Award -

Each year the Kiwanis club awards a $1,500 scholarship to an outstanding Carroll High School football player. The scholarship and award is in honor of the late Coach Charlie Stalcup, a former Carroll High School football coach who died of skin cancer.

The 2009 award was presented to senior defensive end Justin Agnew. He was recognized by his coaches as being the student athlete who best exemplified the strong moral character exhibited by Coach Stalcup. Justin was presented the Stalcup Award at a Kiwanis meeting in June where head coach Hal Wasson and a number of other coaches attended. Agnew plans to continue playing football at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, where he will also study to become a physical therapist.

Battered Women's Foundation - Suzi Thorne

Each year a portion of the funds raised by our 5K run goes to support the foundation. In 2009, as shown below, we presented presented a check for $10,000.

The BWF is a visionary agency founded in 1995 by Vern and Brenda Jackson to aggressively fight the growing problem of domestic violence. Once a battered woman herself, Brenda Jackson recognized that it takes more than temporary shelter to begin a new life of independence and self-sufficiency. It requires a complete lifestyle change – a change founded in renewed hope for the future. The BWF, incorporated as a 501(c)(3), is faith-based on this understanding and designed to complement the work of other organizations by providing long-term assistance to women attempting to break the cycle of abuse and hopelessness.

In addition to the expected services such as counseling, emergency food and clothing and temporary shelter, the BWF offers a vital and unique two-year program designed to heal all areas of a client's life. Clients receive assistance with permanent housing, education, child-care, transportation, job search skills, food and clothing, medical care and, most importantly, rebuilding their self-esteem and giving them hope.
